Volume Four: (In/Re)flection and Miscellany
It might be a bit of a surprise to find some alternate versions of a handful of pieces from (In/Re)flection on this release. The pieces on this recording were done as a series of improvisations, and released “warts and all”.
However, the pieces were recorded in multiple layers. IE, some of the improvisations were done in two or three parts, the effects (ring modulation) were recorded separately, and all of it was done using a soundfont player inside a DAW.
So, after the recording of the work was completed I set about exporting the results. A few things were changed during the export process: a couple of tracks had their soundfonts changed because I didn’t like the original one that I had used, and a few tracks were exported with different layers of ring modulation applied to them (again, based on my preferences). IT’s also noticeable that one of the tracks has no ring modulation, which I believe was supposed to be an alternate track that I left off the original release.
In going back through my archives, I found five tracks that were exported in alternate versions that weren’t used on the original release… So, enjoy these “what could have been” versions of these improvisations.
This Is Recording was included on Into The Rift Volume One. This was the first time that I had tried to use vocals in a work (spoken word samples). I found that I still had the multi-track version of this piece on my drive, and was able to export all of the voice STEMs and the drone as separate tracks for this release. (All of the voices were taken from Libri Vox.)
Abandoned and Suspended were from a project that I started after Floating Through Mist on the Quays and Inside The World Machine. The idea was to use a different set of source material, and develop some different techniques around the concepts that I had explored on my earlier works.
However, at the same time I was working on those pieces, the idea of working on (in/Re)flection had come up, so I split my time between working on both projects. Then I received the invitation to work on The Mystified Remix project, and I set aside the project that I was building Abandoned and Suspended for.
Another reason for setting them aside is I coming out of Pieces and (In/Re)flection I had several more ideas for new works that I wanted to explore — things that were taking me in completely different directions… So that work was left on the scrap heap until now… This release contains all the STEMs for the two pieces that were in the process of being built. I will be releasing realized versions of these pieces on Abandoned & Suspended — along with two more new works.
